FREEDM LAUNCH

Hardcore Is More Than Music checks out the launch of the new DM's store on Neal Street. Doctors, nurses and misfits; the movie love child of 'Carry On' and 'Jubilee'.

Downstairs the DM's Gallery features designer customised boots by Vivienne Westwood, and Jimmy Choo among others. Our fave is Jonathan Richmonds tippex and teen angst inspired effort.

Entertain, inspire, create...

MURKAGE!!

AT the beginning of the tournament Kasparov spotted a typo in our booklet:

'It's very interesting', he said, 'you've managed to put the quarter finals after The Final. He also commented on the picture we had used in the booklet, 'it is a very old one', he said, look at my hair!'. There were some seriously funny moments beginning when one young G asked Garry, 'have you been beaten a lot?'. 'Obviously I have won more than I have lost!' he replied laughing, mystified. Then Wayne followed on, 'Which is your favourite piece?'. Garry carefully replied, 'you have to work with what you've got'.

Kasparov told Michael Dipple who runs Stowe that he had never visited a British youth centre before and at first both he and the young people seemed quite shy interacting. It was really sweet though when Angel, who helped us organise the tournament went up and shook his hand and said 'You are one of my idols man!'. Garry seemed to really like Angel and he signed a book with a special message to him.

Derrick, who was the youngest contestant (aged 11 yo), seemed to scare all the other players who suspected he might be a bit of a prodigy. A small disagreement broke out as 3 or 4 of the boys said' you play the little one', 'no you play the little one blud!'. Derrick is pretty good and incidently our birthdays are on the same day so that makes him special.

Kasparov lives in constant fear of his life because he is such an outspoken critic of the Kremlin and pretty brave, it has to be said. He was really charismatic and as he urged the young people to 'have courage' in their chess games it didn't half feel like we were in a surreal film: the kids, the worlds greatest chess player- oh did I mention there was a wake for a funeral wake going on downstairs in the youthcentre- bags and bags of chicken from Nandos and more silence in the chill out zone than Nina has ever heard.

Cameo from 1XTRA came to present the prizes. Cameo's really into chess and I swear he is SO upbeat and inspiring. As he called Colm to award him his bronze medal, I just couldn't spot him anywhere. Then I noticed Colm coming out of the boys toilets and the whole room look round and cheered him, it was pretty funny.

THIS WAS ENGLAND

See fashions at its most fearsome at the PMYCA exhibition of skinhead culture from the early 1980's, launched to coincide with Shane Meadows new film 'This Is England'. The exhibition is made up of the photo's of one time teen skin Gavin Watson, and his crew, in their High Wycombe hangouts. Make your own mind up about the 'Myth' that is the 'Skinhead'. Perhaps it wont be long before the boot is back.
